The Northwest/KLM flights from Detroit to Arusha, Tanzania, will take more than 16 hours, with a change of planes in Amsterdam. How will I keep busy all that time? With new warnings about blood clots in legs of long-distance airline passengers, I'm afraid to sleep lest a clot finish me off while I'm over the Atlantic. Cape Town as an ideal destination for Europeans

And this sort of lifestyle is in fact the norm in every Northern European city, and certainly for most of Europe in general. It’s a lifestyle I was initially exposed to in Holland, and partly in England. As wonderful as this lifestyle may be, South Africa, and Cape Town in particular, is by far the better place to live. Most people I have spoken with, who are non-South African, agree with my sentiments. We have some problems, like all countries do, but these problems are manageable. At least I believe they are. And so did most Europeans.

Tourism starts to take off in Malawi

There are rumours she is planning to return to adopt a black brother or sister for David. But you don't need to go that far to help this former British colony of Nyasaland. Tourists can boost the country's economy simply by coming here and spending their money. Admittedly a visit to Malawi is more of an adventure than a holiday.

On safari in Tanzania

The young Masai warrior who is with us begins to laugh, long and deep. This is clearly the funniest thing he’s heard in a while. It’s like a Masai telling us he would survive in London by asking a passer-by for £100.
